Post apocalyptic world essay

In a post apocalyptic world, there is a society that is divided into 5 factions that are chosen by the individual when they reach the age of 16. The 5 factions you can choose from include Abnegation (Selfless, quiet, caring, and has a strong concern about others) Amity (Indecisive, flaky, easy going, warm, and peaceful), Candor (Honest, indecisive, insensitive, trustworthy, and confident), Dauntless (Brave, strong, abrasive, bold), and Euradite (Logical, well-educated, condescending, intelligent, and insightful). Beatrice, “Tris” who was born in Abnegation is now 16 and has to choose which faction she wants to be in for the rest of her life. Individuals are given an aptitude test that will reveal which faction is the best fit for them. Although an individual can choose whatever faction they want it is expected that they stay in the faction that they are born into. Tris’ test results are highly unusual, revealing her as a Divergent. Divergent means she has many qualities of each of the factions. The government wants to keep anyone that is Divergent a secret, afraid that it would jeopardize their system of a controlled society. Beatrice goes against her family and the social norm and chooses to be Dauntless. "One choice can transform you. One choice can destroy you. One choice will define you."(PAGE ). NEED ANOTHER QUOTE The characteristics of Dauntless are unafraid, brave, strong, abrasive, and bold. They are competitive, risk takers, daredevils, and are passionate about what they believe in. This is where we see the first characteristics of the symbol fire. Once a faction is chosen, the individual has to pass an initiation. Dauntless initiations are focused on tests of bravery and how to overcome fear, even risking your life in the process. “Fear doesn't shut you down; it wakes you up” (p.313). They focus on using guns, knives and hand to hand combat. “Becoming fearless isn't the point. That's impossible. It's learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from it”(p. 239).
There are many people that want to see Tris fail. Eric, who is the head of Dauntless and leader of the tests is skeptical of Tris and pushes her to her limits. She must muster up all of her inner strength in order to get through the tests and stay in Dauntless. "If conflict in Dauntless ends with only one person standing, I am unsure of what this part of initiation will do to me. Will I be Al, standing over a man's body, knowing I'm the one who put him on the ground, or will I be Will, lying in a helpless heap? And is it selfish of me to crave victory, or is it brave?" (p. 97-98). Through the process of the tests, Tris begins to make meaningful connections with her peers and the people around her. But there are still many people who did not feel the same way about her. They have mixed emotions and are not sure who they should trust in a world of uncertainty. Some stay close but some turn on each other in unimaginable ways. Peoples emotions and personalities can be like fire and consume you if you let it. “Human beings as a whole cannot be good for long before the bad creeps back in and poisons us again”(p. 441). Some of Tris’ friendships are turbulent and sometimes dangerous and help demonstrate the symbol of fire. An example of this is how her friend AL turned on her because Tris didn’t feel the same way about him as he did her. He was angry and vindictive and tried to kill Tris by throwing her off a cliff. Several other characters tried to do the same because they were threatened by her achievements on the tests because Dauntless only accepts the top 10 initiates. All others will be factionless and destined to live in poverty. “You really think The Dauntless will do anything?” I say. “ After they hung you over the chasm? After they made us beat each other unconscious?” (p 204). Peter stabs Edward in the eye because Edward was first place in the Dauntless tests demonstrating the lengths that the initiates will go through to get ahead. “We believe that preparation eradicates cowardice, which we define as the failure to act in the midst of fear,” says Four”(p.77). Erudite leadership plans a war on Abnegation, the governing body of all other factions, because they want to take over leadership of all the other factions. Erudite mind controls Dauntless soldiers to take control and eliminate all Divergents because Divergents are a crack in the master plan. They don’t want them to interfere with their plan for taking over the factions.
A war starts between Abnegation, Erudite and Dauntless. Because they wanted to be the leader of all faction.because they are not highly contributive to the faction system of survival (Amity supplies food, Erudite supplies technology and knowledge, Dauntless supplies protection) Although the government is claiming to want a peaceful society they are creating through their d….The government is threatened by Divergents. They are stronger than most emotionally, physically and mentally so they can carry themselves in lethal situations. Attempt to fix the faulty government by instituting a faction system . each faction blaming different reasons for the governments.
